Chelan-Douglas Land Trust

The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT) works with private landowners, businesses, and local communities in the Wenatchee Valley area of Washington state to ensure that we will be able to enjoy the benefit of our cherished natural areas for years to come.

The Challenge

In 2011, CDLT partnered with The Trust for Public Land, Chelan County, and the City of Wenatchee to convene a community-wide planning effort to chart a common vision and future for the Wenatchee Foothills. In doing so, they involved hundreds of local citizens and interest groups as diverse as sportsmen, realtors and developers, and equestrian and recreation enthusiasts. The resulting Wenatchee Foothills Community Strategy also outlined proposed on-the-ground projects for the Land Trust, for which they would need significant funding.

The Approach

Collins tested an $8 million goal for a capital campaign for the acquisition and stewardship of key properties within the Wenatchee Foothills, and we found strong support for the campaign. CDLT’s remarkably inclusive planning process provided the type of community buy-in and support they needed to conserve prioritized areas.

The Result

With Collins as their campaign counsel, CDLT surpassed The Wenatchee Foothills Campaign goal by raising $8.6 million over the three-year period. With broad-based engagement and fundraising activities, the campaign significantly increased the community’s awareness of the value of the Foothills and their role in anchoring a distinctly livable community.

With the campaign’s success, conserved acreage in the Foothills more than doubles, ensuring future generations will enjoy the same striking viewscapes and natural areas we do today. The campaign also provides critical funding for the ongoing care and stewardship of these properties as well as trail restoration.

Working with Collins Group was instrumental to the success of our campaign.”
