Beyond its doors in Portland, Oregon, OMSI has operated outdoor science education programs across the state for more than 60 years, making a lasting impact on the lives of over 100,000 children and families.
Thanks to a visionary gift of a 20-acre coastal property from John Gray and Investors XII, OMSI was given the opportunity to create a permanent home for its marine science education programs. However, it had been over 20 years since the organization’s last capital campaign; many Oregonians thought of OMSI as a Portland institution and were unaware of its statewide impact.
Having partnered with OMSI on previous consulting projects, Collins was well prepared to act as counsel for its campaign to build a Coastal Discovery Center in Newport, Oregon. To increase OMSI’s reach across the state, we helped expand its individual giving program and assemble and engage a high-profile campaign planning committee. When study results confirmed confidence in campaign success, we guided the creation and engagement of a rock-star campaign team, solidified campaign strategy, and ensured staff and volunteers were trained and prepared to lead a successful campaign.
OMSI’s $10 million campaign is currently on schedule with over $7.8 million secured. During the early and lead gifts phase, we provided guidance regarding board giving and lead donor strategies. Now in the major gifts phase, we are working with OMSI on momentum-building donor engagement and communications strategies, including mini-campaigns that honor campaign and community leaders.
The need for additional outdoor education opportunities in Oregon is great. OMSI’s Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray, scheduled to open in spring 2016, will inspire students and prepare future leaders to succeed for decades to come.
It had been over 20 years since our last capital campaign, and Collins was instrumental in helping us build the tools and create the road map for success.”
